I just found out a good friend and his wife are separating. They are both good people and I am sad for them (and their little girl).

That is unfortunate. I lived through two divorces as a kid. It’s no fun.

Yeah, there’s a lot of that going around in my circles as well right now. 7-10 years ago all our friends were off getting married and now it’s like a good 1/3 are going through nasty splits. I’m even getting a suppoena for one of the ‘at-fault’ ones...

Yeah, some friends of ours are splitting up as well. Both nice people, but one of them has fallen into the bottle and isn’t interested in climbing out. Thankfully there are no kids involved.

I’m 25, grew up with divorce and have been dating the same girl for 6 years, her parents are going through a divorce currently, luckily she understands my hesitation towards marriage

I know this is an unusual thing to say, but my parents’ divorce was the best decision they ever made. The last year they were together they did nothing but fight. It was miserable. Afterwards they avoided each other completely and they were both much happier people, almost immediately. And my sister and I were much happier too as a result.

I mean, I’m glad they were together long enough to have us, but they were not suited to each other at all.

Some folks really fill each other’s needs, contrasting but complementary. Others don’t and just end up coping until they can’t any longer...
